Notes
Recorded live at Monterey, September 1975."Established in 1958 by impresario Jimmy Lyons at a lovely seaside location in Northern California, the Monterey Jazz Festival has made enormous impact over the years. The list of artists who at one time or another have appeared at Monterey reads like a true who's who in jazz and blues. The 1975 edition of the festival is reputed to have been one of the most exciting in the long history if this first-rate festival.
Monterey has prided itself on the diversity of the musicians appearing on its stages, and the '75 was particularly appealing in this respect. The performers on that year covered terrains as varied as it was possible in the jazz scene of the day: from the haunting lyricism of the Bill Evans Trio to the swinging improvisations by Dizzy Gillespie and Cal Tjader, from the down-home soul and blues of Bobby "Blue" Bland to the new approach of Chuck Mangione or the time-honored sounds of John Lewis and Svend Asmussen. Other main participants in this legendary edition of the Monterey festival were the evocative Paul Desmond (self-confessed "slowest alto saxophonist in the world"), the fiery R & B singer Etta James, the interesting big band headed by Toshiko Ayikoshi and Lew Tabackin, the great British pianist Marian McPartland (playing solo for the occasion) plus the very popular Blood, Sweat and Tears fronted by David Clayton-Thomas. An additional highlight of the concert was the reunion of Bill Evans, John Lewis, Marian McPartland and Patrice Rushen to play an outstanding version of Charlie Parker's classis "Billie's Bounce"."
